San Blas
The next leg of our journey is a short 280 nautical mile sail to the San Blas Islands of Panama. It will probably take 2 days. The San Blas islands are a group of islands in the archipelago de San Blas, located in the Northwest of Panama facing the Caribbean Sea.
A persistent low pressure zone in the bight where Panama and Colombia meet could make for a bit of a wild ride.
There are 378 islands within the archipelago and they are scattered around in an area of about 100 square miles. The majority of the islands have no inhabitants, but some of the larger ones are inhabited by the native people known as the Kuna’s. We will spend a little over a week sailing among the islands, snorkeling and fishing.
The next leg is what they call a “positioning” leg. Basically, we need to get to a certain point where we rejoin the rest of the boats. In this case we are all headed to Colon, Panama so we can transit the canal together. The actual sail should be a nice day sail (full day) of about 80 miles.
