“The only way to get a good crew is to marry one.” ― Eric Hiscock *

And nobody did better in this regard than me.

Always up for an adventure, HeeJung has become an awesome sailor - though she would never agree.  Sailing a few times on Standing Bear Lake while growing up in Omaha was probably not the best foreshadowing of what was, and is yet, to come.

We met in college in 1984 and a common interest was to sail around the world.  While we have sailed together ever since…the path to fulfilling that dream wasn’t clear.  Idle hands surfing the Internet during COVID led us to the World ARC website and we swallowed the hook immediately.

Among all the races, deliveries and cruising over the last 5 years, we have probably sailed over 12,000nm offshore.  Over all those miles, a fierce, buy very gracious competitor, HeeJung is always looking for that extra tenth of a knot and how to execute a maneuver better – hardest on herself.  Whether it is 75-feet up the mast in a bosun’s chair or doing bow in the Florida Gulf Stream, she is fearless.  And without a doubt she has always been a huge part of our crew camaraderie and we all have had a great experience because she is onboard.

Don’t take my word for it.  Kevin Hayes said it best.  I was crewing for Al Goethe on Hamburg II for Texas Race Week several years ago.  Kevin yells across the water, “Al, you’ve got the wrong Wescoat!”

Here’s to sailing the next 26,000 miles together!  🍻
